In order to remove prefpanes, I normally head to ~/Library/PreferencePanes (or /Library/PreferencePanes if it's installed for all users) and drag that to the trash. Back in the olden days you could actually play music in iTunes from an iPod it didn't manage. Certainly, I was doing it in 2003, though I can't remember how -- I certainly didn't have to use any 3rd party software. Shame my iPod died recently, really... :-/ It's still a nice small 40GB hard disk, but the screen's broken and the battery only lasts about 30 minutes, so it ain't much use as a music device...
